Changing a Pet’s Name
What if you’ve found the perfect pet and love everything about him… except his name?
When adopting a new four-legged family member, what if you’ve found the perfect pet and love everything about him… except his name? Is it okay to change his name or will he be confused?
At the Michigan Humane Society, we do keep a pet’s name unless the dog came in as a stray, in which case we give him a name. Even baby books are used as a source of inspiration at times!
Is it okay to change an animal's name when you adopt and don’t like the name? Absolutely. Names are meaningful to us all, and it can actually be a very good bonding opportunity for everyone to decide together on a good name.
With a little time and patience, even an adult pet will learn the new name. Simply call your pet’s new name in a happy, friendly voice. When he responds, reward him right away with praise, a treat or a belly rub.
Through repetition and reward, within a few days, your pet will the pet will learn – and love – his new name!
