MHS General Volunteer Application Procedures

MHS Procedure for New Volunteers

A four-month commitment with a minimum of a two-hour shift once per week is required for most positions. If you are interested in becoming an MHS General Volunteer, please follow the steps below:

One Be of Age
Minors must be a minimum of 14 years old to volunteer. Minors between the age of 14-17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times when volunteering.  Both the minor and the adult must attend Volunteer Orientation and meet the schedule commitment requirement for the site/department they are volunteering in. For minors under the age of 14, click here for other ways kids can help.
Two Choose the area you would like to volunteer in and establish your availability and commitment
There is a wide array of volunteering opportunities available at the Michigan Humane Society. Please view current opportunities by department.
Three Sign-up and attend Volunteer Orientation
These mandatory meetings provide an important overview of our organization, while also giving specific information on our volunteer programs, training classes, and additional volunteer requirements. Attendance is by mandatory and by reservation only.
Four Take appropriate training classes
Once you have been approved as an official MHS Volunteer, a volunteer coordinator will help you schedule any required training and set your volunteer shifts.
